Home Area Network

See how much electricity you are using in real-time

With a home area network (HAN), you can use a home energy monitor to track exactly how much electricity you're using in real time. This helps you identify ways to manage your energy use and reduce costs.

What you can do with a Home Energy Monitor

With a monitor, you can:
  • Get real-time usage in kilowatt hours (kWh) and estimated supply cost (cents/hour)
  • Check how much electricity in your home is running 24/7 and see how much electricity different appliances are using such as your refrigerator, dishwasher and clothes dryer
  • Run energy experiments to understand usage patterns and find ways to lower your bill
  • Monitor usage-to-date for a certain time period
  • If you have renewable energy, check how much electricity you’re sending to the grid

Choosing a Home Energy Monitor

Purchase any brand home monitor certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance and link to your PPL Electric Utilities meter at no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions about home energy monitors

How do I activate my HAN?

Activate your monitor by emailing EUHANPilot@pplweb.com. Include your meter and/or account number, along with the MAC ID and Installation Code of your HAN device.

How does the monitor work?

The home energy monitor connects securely and wirelessly to your electric meter, providing real-time electricity usage and cost data. It must be placed within 75 feet of the meter, ideally closer to 50 feet.

What are the benefits of the monitor?

The monitor helps you understand your energy usage with near real-time data (about a 15-second delay). It shows how appliances contribute to your electricity use, helping you identify ways to save energy and money.

Will the data on the monitor match my monthly bill?

No, the monitor displays only the supply portion of your electricity cost. Your bill includes delivery charges, taxes, and other fees not reflected on the monitor.

How do I know if my meter is compatible?

Your meter must be an advanced model. Check your bill or online account for a meter number starting with “30.” The monitor must be within 75 feet of the meter, and obstacles like concrete walls may affect connectivity.

Can I use my monitor with other electric meters?

No, the monitor pairs with one meter at a time. If you move or change meters, contact EUHANPilot@pplweb.com.

Can I buy a monitor as a gift?

No, monitors are tied to specific meters. Only PPL Electric Utilities customers can order a monitor for their account.

Will the monitor protect my privacy?

Yes, the monitor communicates only with your meter. PPL Electric Utilities cannot access the data displayed on your monitor.

How do I set up the monitor?

  • EMU-2: Plug it into a standard outlet.
  • Eagle-200: Connect it to power and link it via Wi-Fi or Ethernet to your smart devices. Use the included Quick Start Guide for assistance.

Can I use batteries instead of the power cord?

  • EMU-2: Works with two AA batteries for short durations but should stay plugged in for regular use.
  • Eagle-200: Requires a constant power connection and does not support batteries.

Where can I find my supply cost?

Your supply cost is indicated on the front of your PPL Electric Utilities bill. You can use this price when comparing other supplier offers. For further instructions, please visit our Check Your Current Rate page.

What should I do if my monitor isn't working?

Here are some basic problem-solving tips:

  • Ensure the monitor is within 50 feet of the meter.
  • Minimize barriers like concrete walls.
  • Restart the monitor by unplugging it or performing a soft reset (refer to your model’s guide).
  • If issues persist, contact EUHANPILOT@pplweb.com.

What happens if I move?

If you move, the unit will automatically stop monitoring usage at your old address and will need to be re-programmed by PPL Electric Utilities for your new home. Email EUHANPilot@pplweb.com to have your monitor re-programmed.

Can I connect multiple monitors to my meter?

Yes, up to five monitors can connect to a single meter.
