Keep the cold out and the comfort in: Simple ways to prep your home for winter. Energy Awareness Month is here.
At PPL Electric Utilities, we believe in powering through winter together. Whether you’re looking for tips to stay warm or tools to help you save, we’re here for you. As cooler weather rolls in and Energy Awareness Month gets underway, it’s a great time to make sure your home is ready for the season. A few simple updates can help keep your space cozy while saving energy and money.
Before the cold sets in, check your HVAC or heat pump filters. Replacing them regularly helps your system run efficiently. It’s also smart to schedule a routine checkup. Want to save more? Consider installing a smart thermostat — it can automatically adjust your home’s temperature for comfort and savings. Find deals at pplelectric.com/marketplace. Try DIY storm windows
Storm windows are a simple way to boost insulation. You can install them in about 20–30 minutes per window, and they could help cut energy costs by up to 33% annually. Check out the Department of Energy’s guide at energy.gov for instructions. Seal windows and doors
Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal gaps. Even small drafts can lead to heat loss and reduced comfort. Rethink the fireplace
Wood-burning fireplaces may feel cozy, but they can pull warm air out of your home, making other rooms colder and forcing your heating system to work harder. Keep the damper closed when not in use. Use ceiling fans wisely
Ceiling fans aren’t just for summer. Switch the direction to clockwise to push warm air down and help you feel warmer, allowing you to lower the thermostat.
Decorate with efficiency in mind
Your décor can help you save energy. Hanging thick drapes close to windows and letting them fall to the windowsill or floor reduces heat loss. High-pile rugs or carpeting can also make rooms feel warmer, so you can turn the heat down a notch.
