Sunbury Frackville Project

PPL Electric Utilities

A necessary upgrade for reliability

We’re planning to rebuild approximately 37 miles of 230 kV  transmission line in Northumberland, Schuylkill and Snyder  Counties to support anticipated load growth, including a large load customer. Doing so will also help to improve reliability, protect the grid from extreme weather and reduce the frequency and duration of outages.

Why the project is needed

PJM, the regional grid operator responsible for transmission planning and reliability, identified a need to increase the capability of this portion of the transmission system to help maintain reliable electric service. After evaluating potential solutions, PJM selected PPL Electric's proposal to upgrade the existing line.

Project Fast Facts

  • Upgrade approximately 9.75 miles of existing 230 kV transmission line.
  • Install advanced, higher-capacity transmission wire that can carry more electricity safely and efficiently.
  • Reinforce or replace select structures as needed to support the upgraded line.

Complete all work within an existing PPL Electric transmission corridor.
